What is a prosthodontist?
A prosthodontist is a dentist who has completed three or more years of additional education after dental school to become an expert in the restoration and replacement of teeth. In Quebec, only 1.2% of dentists are prosthodontists; in fact, general dentists often refer to prosthodontists for advanced care. The extended postgraduate education and hands-on training a prosthodontist receives must be done at a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC). This program focuses on how to think globally and integrate all specialty care (endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, etc.) into a sophisticated plan, while using scientifically proven treatments and evidence based dentistry. Prosthodontists have the ability to visualize the whole picture, hence elaborate a customized treatment plan that will correspond the patients functional and aesthetic needs.
