What is a prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dentist who has completed three or more years of additional education after dental school to become an expert in the restoration and replacement of teeth. In Quebec, only 1.2% of dentists are prosthodontists; in fact, general dentists often refer to prosthodontists for advanced care. Dr. Geneviève Guertin and Dr. Hugo Ciaburro are prosthodontists recognized by the Ordre des dentistes du Québec (ODQ).

The extended postgraduate education and hands-on training a prosthodontist receives must be done at a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC). This program focuses on how to think globally and integrate all specialty care (endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, etc.) into a sophisticated plan, while using scientifically proven treatments and evidence based dentistry. Prosthodontists have the ability to visualize the whole picture, hence elaborate a customized treatment plan that will correspond the patients functional and aesthetic needs.
